Sail from Ahakista in West Cork to the beautiful island of Porto Santo, a perfect introduction to ocean passage making.
Realise your dreams, embark upon an ocean adventure following the migration path of whales that have spent the summer in West Cork. Our course, close to the Porcupine Seabight brings us quickly into true blue water on this 1170nm ocean passaage.
If you plan to become an Ocean Yachtmaster, sail your own yacht south to the sun, or just want to experince ocean sailing then this milebuilding passage will provide valuable sea miles and the opportunity to learn the practicalities without the responsibility. The skipper is an RYA instructor and is very happy to share with you his knowledge gained through years of experience. We welcome all enquires regardless of your previous sailing experience.
There are not many opportunities to experience this Ocean Passage which skirts the Bay of Biscay and south to Porto Santo. This passage from West Cork ticks all the boxes. Eight days of watchkeeping, 1170 miles of proper ocean sailing across open water and then landfall of Porto Santo just just East of Madeira. The prevailing wind from the W-SW should make for a comfotable passage with the wind mainly abeam. In early October the seas are warm and sealife abounds with whales, dolphins and sea turtles. This trip is just long enough to get into the rhythm of real ocean passage sailing.
We start by making a short passage to Bere Island to get you familiarised with Merlin before making the ocean passage the next day.
This is a non commercial trip and you will only be contributing to the basic running costs of the boat which are food, water, gas, diesel and marina fees. This is a considerable saving over the commercial price of €2,240pp.
