West Cork to Porto de Baiona

West Cork to Porto de Baiona

Sail from Ahakista in West Cork to Porto de Baiona in Northern Spain, a perfect introduction to ocean passage making.

An ocean adventure, retracing the ancient route of the early Celts and the Spanish Armada from Northern Spain. Join us as we cross the nearly 600 nautical miles of Atlantic ocean between West Cork and Baiona and discover what ocean sailing is all about.

If you plan to become an Ocean Yachtmaster in the future this trip also provides valuable sea miles and the opportunity to learn the practicalities without the responsibility. The skipper is an RYA Yachtmaster instructor and is very happy to share with you his knowledge gained through years of experience.

There are not many opportunities to experience this crossing of the Bay of Biscay, but the trip from West Cork to Baiona checks all the boxes. 5 days of watchkeeping, 500 miles of proper ocean sailing across open water and then landfall on Northern Spain. The prevailing wind from the W-SW should make this passage mainly a beam reach and in early October should be reasonably warm. This trip is just long enough to get the feel of a real ocean passage and short enough that it doesn't become too tiring.

We do not start the ocean passage straight away, but spend our first few days familiarising ourselves with the boat and sailing along the spectacular West Cork coastline to Bere Island at the mouth of Bantry Bay.
